[Poem follows an essay on unlawful pleasures from the
Spectator, vol. 2, no. 151]
When pleasure is pursu'd in an unlawful way,
It surfeits ever sense; but never does allay,
The strong unwearied desire in the vile wretch
Still to pursue the same he has an ardent itch;
And mourns at nothing more, than having lost his gust
To relish as he did his old forbidden lust.
